Book profile

Al Kalima started publishing under the leadership of Syrian author Mazhar Mallouhi in 1998, with the appearance of An Eastern Reading of the Gospel of Luke and since then we have produced several more titles either as specially commissioned works or translations of books relevant to our readership. Our publications seek to answer questions about the Bible that our readers ask. Fundamental to Mazhar’s Eastern re-presentation of the scriptures is his strong belief that many Arab Muslims can more easily understand the Bible than Western Christians, as they are already steeped in the Middle Eastern culture in which it was written. Consequently their fresh interpretations can shed new light for those who are not from the Middle East.

Many readers enjoy reading fiction a well-told story can convey truths which are hard to explain in a in a theological tome. Arab readers have enjoyed the novels of Mazhar Mallouhi for over forty years. Some of his titles include Lost in the City, Moment of Death, and The Traveller. Al Kalima has also published selections from the writings of Russian Christian authors Tolstoy and Dostoevsky, which remain popular in the Arab world.

The issue of Palestine is important to every Arab; we have published two testimonies of Palestinian Christians who are working for peace and reconciliation. The final category of devotional books includes two books by John Piper and John Pollock’s life of Christ, The Master.
